Naya Rivera: I think that white people shower a lot more than ethnics

Whenever I hear people pontificate and generalize about “white people do this” and “black folks do that,” it takes me back to that era of comedy in like the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. Comedians were always doing bits like that. “White people eat like this…” or “Have you ever noticed that white people are always going —?” So this Naya Rivera story reminded me of that, which is to say that this entire conversation is SO DATED. Naya Rivera was a guest host on The View yesterday, and she decided to discuss her thoughts on how white people shower more than “ethnics.” Seriously, she said “ethnics.” I can’t tell if this is racist or just stupid (or both?)

We never expected to know this much about Naya Rivera’s hygiene habits. The 28-year-old Glee star, who celebrated her birthday on Monday, was a guest host on The View this morning where the songstress shared a rather, um, interesting theory about showering.

After moderator Nicolle Wallace defended the fact that she showers three times a day (pre- and post-show, plus once before bed), the Fox beauty chimed in with a headline-making hypothesis.

“I think that white people shower a lot more than ethnics,” Rivera said as Wallace couldn’t help but burst out into a fit of giggles. “I feel like showering more than once a day or every day is such a white people thing.”

After her comments, Rosie O’Donnell proceeded to call upon a stunned African-American woman in the audience, who insisted she is a “frequent showerer” before Rivera defended her remarks.

“My mom is half black, half Puerto Rican. She showers every day, so I can say this. But I’m now married to a white man,” she said, referring to husband Ryan Dorsey, whom she secretly wed in July 2014. “And he showers a lot, like two, three times a day. I’m like, ‘What are you doing?'”

During the silly debate, Rivera also revealed how often she showers and insisted that her cleanliness is spot-on.

“So the study says, a dermatologist says you are only supposed to shower once or twice every three days, so I’m right on the mark,” the newlywed star explained.

I’m including the video below. Personally, I think it’s weird that someone would shower THREE times a day too, but I think it’s less a “white person problem” and more like an OCD issue. At most, I shower twice a day, but that’s only when I’ve been to the gym. If I’m not going to the gym and I’m not going anywhere (like, it’s a Sunday), I can go 24-36 hours without showering. And I’ve never heard that dermatologists recommend NOT showering every day. Now, I know it’s better for your hair to not wash it every day (but I still do, because my hair is really fine and oily). Oh, and my mom is white and now that she’s retired, it practically takes an act of Congress to get her to shower. I’m serious! She’s showering like twice a week now.
